Building a suicide safer community, business by business
Caring Connections has developed the ‘suicide aware’ scheme, aiming to recognise business / organisations dedicated to reducing suicide across the Merseyside region. For an organisation to achieve this accreditation they must have a minimum of 2 ASIST (applied suicide intervention skills training) practitioners within their organisation and have a mental health policy.
Paul Growney CEO of Caring Connections stated ‘this programme aims to build individual / organisational awareness of suicide and from completing specialist training in the ASIST programme will provide them with the skills to intervene with suicidal staffs / individuals etc. Suicide grew by 11% last year the more people we can equip with the skills to intervene when an individual is suicidal the better. We aim to have 100 business on this scheme by the end of 2020’.
Caring Connections founded The Barbara Bettle Foundation support service in 2017 providing support to those bereaved by suicide in which they have supported over 80 individuals through 1 – 1 support. It is found that those who have been bereaved by suicide are three time more likely to have a recurrent suicide and at great risk themselves for a recurrent suicide.
The central aim of this programme is having more people equipped with the skills to save a life and their to be recognition for local business who aim to make a difference.
